About the role

Reporting directly to the Head of Marine Operations, the Marine Pilot is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of large ships in and out of Lyttelton Port. You will be responsible for liaising with shipping agents and port users, providing professional advice to our clients and maintaining positive relations with internal stakeholders.

With an acute awareness of the risks associated with the movement of large ships in confined water, you will work within operational limits providing a safe, efficient, and competent pilotage service.

About you

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

Master Foreign Going (Class 1) Certificate of Competency or an equivalent certificate recognised or accepted by the Director of Maritime New Zealand coupled with experience as a Master or Chief Officer.
Significant experience working as a Marine Pilot at the highest licence level in a Port environment, along with demonstrated knowledge and competence in ship handling and pilotage.
Experience in berthing alongside loading terminals.
Comprehensive knowledge of shipping, navigation and port operations.
Excellent English Language Skills (written and verbal).
Intermediate computer literacy skills to use marine software applications.
The ability and willingness to model the company values and behaviours including supporting a culture that promotes safety, engagement and continuous improvement.
An open-minded approach with a 'can do' attitude and a good sense of humour.
